We work takedowns and throws into all of our MMA classes in Raleigh. We think it's particularly important to incorporate frequent takedown drilling into Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and MMA Grappling classes. Whether you are training for self defense or competition, a solid takedown game gives you the advantage right off the bat.
A lot of our techniques come from freestyle wrestling and Judo, though we draw from a broad range of other MMA disciplines. Fundamentally, any takedown requires separating the opponent's main body mass and center of balance from its supports.
This can include throws, trips, ankle picks, single- and double-leg takedowns, sweeps, and more.
We practice takedowns in a safe manner, with extensive drilling first, then proceeding to light sparring where the goal is establishing position and developing smooth and efficient techniques. From there each student can integrate these moves into full strength sparring.
